The Setouchi Triennale is a contemporary art festival held every three years on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. First launched in 2010, the festival spans approximately 100 days and is divided into three seasons: Spring, Summer, and Autumn, allowing visitors to experience the unique charm of Setouchi across different times of the year. With around one million visitors from Japan and abroad, the event has become one of Japan’s most representative international art festivals.

With the theme of “Restoration of the Sea”, the festival encourages visitors to explore the islands using art as their guide, interacting with artists, local residents, and volunteers. Through this, they can experience Setouchi’s natural beauty, island culture, and local way of life. This integration of art and locality has resonated with many people worldwide.

Historically, the Seto Inland Sea has been a vital transportation route where ships frequently stopped at various islands, bringing in new cultural influences that merged with the islands’ existing traditions. However, due to globalization, efficiency-driven industrialization, and cultural homogenization, island populations have been declining, aging issues have intensified, and regional vitality has weakened, causing the islands’ unique identities to fade. The Setouchi Triennale aims to revitalize the harmony between Setouchi’s beautiful nature and human culture while transforming the region into a “Sea of Hope” for communities worldwide.

Purchase Information

How to Use:

1. After booking, you will receive two PDF files (electronic vouchers) via email.
2. On the day of use, present the QR code at the designated facility to redeem your tickets.

Validity Period:

• Setouchi Area Rail Pass (7 Days): Valid for 90 days from the booking date.
• Kagawa & Okayama "Setouchi Triennale 2025" Art Passport (All-Season Pass): Valid from April 18, 2025, to November 9, 2025.

Product Details

Setouchi Area Rail Pass (7 Days)

1. Once successfully booked, a confirmation email will be sent automatically to the registered email address.
2. To redeem the physical rail pass, present the verification code or QR code from the confirmation email along with a non-Japanese passport at designated ticket vending machines (refer to the image below).
   • Ticket vending machines support five languages: Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English, and Korean.

   • If the machine is out of order or your passport does not have an IC chip, visit a designated JR Green Window (Midori no Madoguchi) to redeem your ticket.
3. After successful redemption, you will receive a physical rail pass.
4. Reserving a designated seat ticket: Before boarding, take your physical rail pass to a JR Green Ticket Machine to reserve a designated seat.

Important Notes for JR West Rail Pass Designated Seat Reservations:

1. Different rail passes allow different numbers of designated seat reservations. Please check the product details page.
2. Only certain trains allow reserved seating; refer to the product details page.
3. You must exchange your designated seat ticket separately at a JR Green Ticket Machine or JR Green Window.
4. If you run out of designated seat reservations or do not reserve in advance, you can still board non-reserved seating using the rail pass.
5. For rail passes that allow unlimited designated seat reservations, starting from the 7th reservation, you must visit a JR Green Window for booking; self-service machines cannot be used.

   • Redemption is NOT available during non-festival periods:
     • May 26 – July 31, 2025
     • September 1 – October 2, 2025

Eligibility & Applicable Participants:

Setouchi Area JR West Rail Pass (7-Day Pass)

• Must be 12 years or older at the time of exchange or purchase.
• Must hold a passport issued by a government outside of Japan.
• Must have a residency status equivalent to "Temporary Visitor" as defined by the Japanese Immigration Control Act.

Kagawa & Okayama "Setouchi Triennale 2025" Art Passport (Full-Season Pass)

• No age restrictions; available for both adults and children.

• This product requires two confirmation steps. After successful booking, you will receive a confirmation email along with an electronic voucher within 48 hours. Please check your email inbox.
